National Book Award finalists

I rarely mention any literary awards here, but this time I must, for it looks like my tardy, proscrastinating, read-books-years-after-publication self is finally ahead of the curve for once.

Fiction:
Aleksandar Hemon, The Lazarus Project
Rachel Kushner, Telex From Cuba
Peter Matthiessen, Shadow Country
Marilynne Robinson, Home
Salvatore Scibona, The End

Hemon's one of my favorite writers and The Lazarus Project is the best book I've read this year, so obviously I'm really pulling for him. But if he has to lose, I'd prefer that it be to Matthiessen, whose terrific At Play In the Fields of the Lord was a runner-up for the NBA in 1966 but doesn't seem to get much notice these days.
