Stuart Dybek
The chain bookstore in the office building next door (one which somehow does a pretty good job of stocking Chicago-related nonfiction) has a pile of Stuart Dybek's The Coast of Chicago for sale, which isn't surprising given that it's now been municipally-blessed as the current "One Book, One Chicago" selection.
But Dybek's new, highly-acclaimed I Sailed With Magellan? Not a copy to be found.
The cruel vagaries of modern bookselling.

I've noticed the same thing with Book of Ralph, though that hasn't received the same level of national attention that Dybek's Magellen has. But is there a reason why any Chicago bookstore wouldn't have these books prominently displayed (ok, at least have a few copies in stock)? Crazy. You can imagine how frustrating it must be for an author, who gets at most a month of two of buzz around a new book, when the industry can't even make the product available to interested buyers.

Makes me wonder sometimes why I want to be a fiction writer. Thank goodness for the intrinsic rewards.
